A suicide bomb attack near a checkpoint in southern Yemen has killed at least four Yemeni soldiers. An al-Qaeda-linked group has claimed responsibility for the bombing near the city of al-Bayda.

The attack triggered clashes between the army and militants belonging to Ansar al-Sharia, the group behind the bombing.

People inspect the scene of a suicide car bomb attack at a checkpoint outside the
Yemeni city of al-Bayda March 13, 2012.

The group says the attack was in revenge for recent US drone strikes on al-Bayda and Abyan provinces, which have killed more than 60 militants during the past week.

It’s the latest in a string of attacks by Islamic militants in Yemen’s south, launched since President Abd-Rabbu Hadi took office last month vowing to fight against al Qaeda’s regional wing.
