German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti have said all eurozone countries must focus firmly on fiscal stability. The comments came at a joint news conference following their meeting in Rome on Tuesday.

Monti says he believes the worst of the eurozone’s financial crisis is over, but that the region’s leaders must not let down their guard. Angela Merkel echoed his opinions.

Minister Mario Monti at Chigi palace in Rome March 13, 2012.

Merkel said: "We have to work towards concrete objectives such as tax measures. We must be competitive with China, India and all the other emerging countries and above all we have to achieve economic stability. We cannot run the risk of our debts becoming objects of financial speculation. This is our objective for a more stable Europe."
