The Syrian government has shelled opposition areas and battled armed opponents across the country despite a UN call for an end to the violence.

At least 30 people on both sides were killed in clashes in different parts of the country, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. This includes 10 civilians on a bus in the north-western province of Idlib. It was not clear if the bus had been targeted or caught in crossfire. There was no definite word on casualties in Thursday’s clashes.

Syrian police cordon the area around the criminal police headquarters in Duwar al
-Jamarek after a bomb blast.

The UN says more than 8,000 people have been killed in the year-long conflict. UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon says Wednesday's Security Council statement had sent a “clear and unmistakable” call for violence to end.

But Damascus appeared to dismiss the statement, which is not legally binding.
