The coup in Mali has sparked wide international condemnation and calls for reinstatement of the elected government of President Amadou Tomani Toure.

The US, the African Union, the European Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and individual countries in Africa and elsewhere have deplored Toure’s ousting five weeks ahead of planned elections.

The Economic Community of Western African States called the actions of the mutineers misguided, and said it does not condone recourse to violence as a means of seeking redress.

The White House called for an immediate restoration of "constitutional rule", as did French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe.

The Tunisian foreign ministry says it’s closely monitoring events in Mali and hoping for the return of security, stability and the rule of law. Algeria has condemned the use of force and rejected any unconstitutional changes.
