Japan’s exports fell in February at a slower pace than the previous month, bringing the trade balance to its first surplus in five months. It’s a sign that a pick-up in foreign demand will help the economy recover in coming months and takes some of the pressure off the Bank of Japan to ease monetary policy.

Following a 9 percent drop in January, Japan’s exports dropped only 2.7 percent last month, smaller than the median forecast for a 6.4 percent annual decline. That lifted the trade balance to a surplus of 390 million US dollars, after posting its biggest ever trade deficit of 180 million dollar in January.

But analysts caution -- Japan is likely to slip back into a trade deficit in coming months, as it imports more fossil fuels to offset declining use of nuclear power.
