Germany has sworn in its new president. Joachim Gauck, a former Lutheran pastor and human rights activist from communist East Germany, won an overwhelming majority in the election.

Gauck’s inauguration is the country’s 11th president since the end of World War II. The 72-year-old new leader is also the oldest head of state in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany. Gauck is a relentless advocate of democracy and civil rights who enjoys the backing of most major parties. He received 991 of the 1,232 ballots cast, from a special assembly of German lawmakers and other dignitaries.

Germans hope Gauck, a prominent player in the peaceful protests that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, can restore dignity to the presidency, a post tarnished by financial scandals that toppled his predecessor Christian Wulff.
