US Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales is facing 17 counts of murder in connection with a shooting rampage in two southern Afghanistan villages in the early hours of March 11th.

In addition to the murder counts, Bales is also likely to be charged on six counts of attempted murder, and six counts of aggravated assault, as well as violations of military law.

According to US officials, Bales is set to be read the charges Friday at the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where he has been held since being flown from Afghanistan last week. The charges come almost two weeks after the massacre in which the 38-year-old Bales allegedly opened fire on Afghan civilians, including women and children, while they slept in their beds, then burned the bodies.
