Just days before a ceasefire deal comes into effect, violence in Syria continues to escalate near the capital Damascus as well as the central city of Homs.

In the outskirts of Damascus, Syrian troops clashed with opposition fighters on Friday. Government troops conducted raids on army defectors and patrolled deserted streets with tanks.

Activists claim that three members of the military were killed and at least one house was burned down.

Meanwhile in the rebel-held town of Rastan, near the restive city of Homs, activists claimed that government forces were trying to push into the town with heavy weapons. But their claim could not be independently verified.

Syrian troops have been laying siege to Rastan since rebels took control of the city in late January.
