The chairperson of the African Union high level implementation panel on sudan, Thabo Mbeki, has held talks with southern Sudan President Salva Kiir. This comes amid growing international concern over the possibility of full-scale war between Sudan and South Sudan. Mbeki says his mission is to get both sides to sign a road map to peace but as CCTV'S Robert Nagila reports, both sides must agree to a ceasefire first for the process to work.

Against a back drop of growing border violence between the Khartoum and south sudan, Thabo Mbeki who leads the mediation panel jetted into Juba, the capital of south sudan for a meeting with President Salva Kiir. Top on the agenda was how to bring the two sides back to the negotiating table to put pen to paper in a deal that will see an immediate cessation of hostilities.

Thabo Mbeki said, "We have come to juba essentially to see President Salva Kiir to seek his advice about the next step that we should take between South Sudan and Sudan."

CCTV's Robert Nagila said, "Thabo Mbeki's arrival comes amid escalating violence between the north and the south already a six point plan is on the table, but before it can be effected, a ceasefire must be implemented."

That would mean the withdrawal of forces from each others territories, but hours before mbeki's arrival, south sudan claimed it had shot a sudanese airforce jet Mig29 that was allegedly on a bombing raid in the oil rich pan akuak region.

Thabo Mbeki said, "There should be a summit meeting between Salva Kiir and Bashir here in juba and we want to discuss that with the president."

Sudan has denied the claim and its negotiators walked out of negotions with the south before the could sign an agreement to end hostilities in the ethiopian capital addis ababa.

After the meeting with Kiir, Mbeki will travel to Khartoum for talks with Sudanese President Omar El Bashir.
