The Iranian navy has rescued 28 Chinese crew members hijacked by Somali pirates off southern Iran.

The ship was commandeered near the port of Chabahar, on its way to a port in southwestern Iran when it was attacked by the pirates early Friday.

Chinese Ambassador to Iran, Yu Hongyang, demanded swift action from Iran, which dispatched its navy to rescue the crew. Two warships caught up with the ship Xianghuamen, which belongs to a company in eastern China, and 9 Somali pirates were detained.

The rescued crew are rushing to repair the broken power system, and the ship will be back on its way soon after. Hundreds of pirate attacks have occurred in the Arabian Sea in recent years, with Chinese shipping vessels routinely targeted.
