A platform for regional integration.

The first meeting between the foreign ministers from the three countries was held on Jeju island in South Korea in 2007. The top issue at that meeting was de-nuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

During the 2008 meeting, the three countries agreed to enhance cooperation on disaster management, due to the frequency of earthquakes, typhoons, floods and tsunamis affecting the region.

As 2009 marked the ten years since the beginning of trilateral cooperation in 1999, the meeting held in Shanghai tried to discuss how to deepen trilateral cooperation from a strategic perspective.

Properly handling the incident in the interest of regional peace and stability topped the 2010 meeting. The foreign ministers from the three countries exchanged views on the sinking of the South Korean warship the Cheonan.

In 2011, the fifth Foreign Ministerial meeting took place amid the Fukushima nuclear crisis. The three-way meeting discussed strategies to cope with radiation contamination.

The Foreign Ministers Meeting has provided a platform for in-depth discussions on developing future cooperation between the three nations, and to prepare for the trilateral meetings among the leaders of China, Japan and South Korea.
