Syrian troops have resumed their shelling of residential rebel-held neighborhoods in the central city of Homs.

The latest resurgence of violence on Sunday came after the UN Security Council voted to dispatch its first group of monitors to the country to shore up a shaky truce. Government forces and rebels are accusing each other of violating the ceasefire at the center of international envoy Kofi Annan’s peace plan. Homs-based activists say Sunday began with a barrage of shells that fell at a rate of six per minute, shaking the neighborhood of Khaldiyeh for the second consecutive day. There’s been no information on the number of casualties.
