US seeks closer defence cooperation with Brazil

US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta has hailed Brazil's growing strength and expressed the US willingness to seek closer defence cooperation with Brazil.

During his visit to Rio De Janeiro, Panetta urged Brazil to work with the US to help improve African militaries by conducting combined exercises and other training. Panetta said the US and Brazil are at a critical point in their history and that a stronger partnership could be a force for peace.

Panetta also urged the country to buy American-made Super Hornet fighter jets. And the US is also seeking to conclude a deal to sell Brazil 36 Boeing jets for 4 billion US dollars.
