The British military is carrying out security tests in London ahead of the Olympics -- including the deployment of ground-to-air missiles.

The air defence weapons are sited on top of London apartment blocks. The missiles are capable of targeting large aircrafts and fend off a "nine-eleven" style attack.

The government has defended the ground-based missile system as a "last resort" measure of security. But the decision to use an apartment block as a possible launch pad has rankled local residents.

Typhoon fighters jets have also been dispatched to the Royal Air base at Northolt for the tests.

It is the first time the Royal Air base has seen fighter planes since the Second World War. The military says it hopes the security exercises will deter attackers considering targeting the Olympic Games to take place from July 27 to August 12.
