In Greece, as campaigning comes to an end before Sunday’s vote, Greek conservative party leader Antonis Samaras, the top candidate for prime minister, has asked for a strong mandate to rule alone in a single party government.

Antonis Samaras said, "What we need is stability, a strong mandate, a strong government, so that we can proceed forward."

Samaras is hoping a last-minute polarisation of voters will give him a majority. But the latest polls show he will not gather enough support and will have to share power with the Socialist PASOK party, which runs second in the polls. The two parties are the main supporters of the European Union and IMF bailout loan agreement. They’ve been competing for votes from smaller anti-bailout parties after public anger over the tough economic austerity pushed voters away from the two main parties.

Samaras’ New Democracy party is part of the current temporary coalition government between his party and the socialists. It backed austerity measures needed for the second bailout agreement Greece received earlier this year, but Samaras has been a vocal critic of the savage cuts in spending prescribed by Europe.
