Japan's Hokkaido Electric Power Corporation has shut down the country's last active nuclear reactor, leaving Japan with no nuclear-derived electricity for the first time in four decades.

Hokkaido Electric said the process to turn off the Number 3 unit at the Tomari nuclear plant in northern Japan began at 5 p.m. local time. The shutdown will finish on Sunday. Japan faces projected power shortages of up to 20 percent this summer, and officials, including Trade Minister Yukio Edano, had been trying to win public support for reactivating two idle reactors at another plant. However, growing public concerns over the safety of nuclear technology after last March's Fukushima accident have put the project on hold.
