The Olympic flame has been formally handed over from Greece to the London delegation. The ceremony took place in Athens at the Panathenaic stadium where the first modern Games were held in 1896.

Greek weightlifter Pyrros Dimas and Chinese gymnast Li Ning acted as the last Torchbearers and together lit the cauldron. Princess Anne, president of the British Olympic Association, received the flame from the president of the Hellenic Olympic Committee Spyros Capralos. Former England soccer captain Beckham also played a role in accompanying the flame back to the UK.

The flame will be kept overnight at the British embassy in Athens before being flown to a navy base in southwest England. The 70-day, 8,000-mile relay around Britain will start at Land's end on Saturday.

Organisers are hoping it will spark an explosion of enthusiasm for London's already eagerly anticipated Olympic showcase.
