Residents and business owners will be allowed to return to the small, historic mining town of Mogollon in US New Mexico on Monday after fire crews made progress battling a large wildfire.

The blaze is the largest in New Mexico’s recorded history. Although the more than 1,200 firefighters are making progress, the fire is only 17 percent contained and there is no projection for when it may come fully under control.

The town of Mogollon was evacuated on May 26 as extreme wind fuelled the fire. Firefighting crews say that milder weather in upcoming days should allow them to increase containment. But there are concerns that old stands of timber in the area could ignite and create "potentially catastrophic wildfires." The town will open to the public again on Wednesday.
