Syria’s foreign ministry has slammed statements by UN officials that the country is in a state of civil war. The ministry instead called the conflict a struggle to eradicate terrorism and killings.

In a statement carried by Syria’s official news agency SANA, the ministry said "talking about a civil war in Syria runs counter to reality." The statement said "Syria was still expecting that UN officials would deal objectively, precisely and even handedly, with the current developments, especially after the deployment of UN observers in most Syrian provinces.

The ministry also stressed Syria’s keenness to stick to the six-point peace plan brokered by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan. In an attempt to show resolve to implement Annan’s plan, Syrian authorities on Wednesday, released 500 prisoners, who were arrested during the 15-months of unrest but hadn’t been involved in homicides.
