The battle for Haffa, in the mountains of Latakia province has raged for eight days as government forces shelled the town to drive out rebels.

Syria State television says government forces have "purged" Haffa of "armed terrorist groups" and the Foreign Ministry has urged U.N. observers to head to the area immediately. U.N. observers are now reported to have entered the town, two days after being forced to turn back.

Meanwhile, a bomb has exploded in a Damascus suburb, home to a popular Shiite Muslim shrine. The blast is reported to have wounded at least two people. Activists say government troops have continued to shell rebellious areas in central Homs province.
