Scores of Buddhists, both elderly and young, have sought temporary refuge in temples in Myanmar's town of Sittwe, following sectarian clashes. The conflict that has pitted ethnic Rakhine Buddhists against stateless Rohingya Muslims has caused at least 21 deaths.

At a temple in Sittwe, internally displaced Rakhine Buddhists waited for charity food rations, whereas food was scarce. After five days of sectarian strife, heavy rain brought an uneasy calm in western Myanmar on Wednesday. But many residents in the region were too fearful to sleep and faced food shortages.

In Sittwe, soldiers and police patrolled and warned people by loudspeaker to abide by the existing state of emergency. Other measures include an overnight curfew, and a ban on public meetings of more than five persons. President Thein Sein has warned that the spiraling violence could threaten the democratic reforms.
