The Pakistan People's Party has nominated senior party leader, Makh-doom Sha-ha-bu-ddin, for the office of Prime Minister. This comes a day after the country's Supreme Court disqualified former Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani.

The decision was made at a meeting of the People's party's senior parliament members and leaders. Pakistani President and co-chairman of the party, Asif Ali Zardari, presided over the meeting.

The President has summoned the National Assembly session to meet on Friday to elect a new Prime Minister. Candidates will submit their nomination papers in the National Assembly secretariat on Thursday.

Analysts say that by nominating Shaha-buddin, the country's majority party wants to strengthen its position in southern parts of Punjab province, the country's biggest province which plays key role in government formation.
