Premier Wen: China to contribute $6mln to UN Environmental trust fund

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has addressed the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio De Janerio. He urged the international community to work jointly on promoting sustainable development, while pledging China’s readiness to live up to its responsibilities as a major developing nation. China has attached great importance to the Rio+20 summit. And it’s been calling for political will and wisdom to achieve progress on sustainable development.

In addressing the three-day Rio-20 summit, Premier Wen Jiabao has said "countries around the globe should take a fair, just, open and inclusive approach and adhere to the Rio Principles, in particular the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities."

The Premier also announced that China will contribute 6 million US dollars to a UN Environmental trust fund for projects and activities to help developing countries raise their environmental protection capacities.

He also promised that China would make available 31.7 million US dollars for a three-year international project to help small island nations, underdeveloped countries and African countries tackle climate change.

Wen Jiabao pointed out that the global reach for sustainable development was not balanced and that "Sustainable development faces new and grave challenges posed by the international financial crisis, climate change, energy and food security and local conflicts."

He proposed that the international community explore proven models of green economic growth and added that a green economy should be pursued according to the actual conditions in a country.

The Premier also proposed improving the tools of global governance and called for a new type of international partnership to tackle the issues of environment and sustainability.

Meanwhile, the Premier says China is ready to live up to its responsibilities, saying "the more it develops, the more opportunities it will create and the greater the contribution it will make to the world."

Premier Wen Jiabao also added that China will help other developing countries work on ecological preservation and controlling desertification.

The Rio +20 summit hopes to review the progress made over the past 20 years and take swift action to address the world’s current crises. It also seeks to reiterate political commitments and address new problems and challenges to sustainable development. The leaders are expected to reach a series of political agreements on improving living standards and protecting the environment during their meeting.
