The US administration has issued congratulations to Mohamed Morsi, the Islamist candidate who has been declared the winner of last weekend's Egyptian presidential run-off election.

A statement from White House spokesman Jay Carney called the election a "milestone in their transition to democracy." He also called for Morsi to respect power authorized by the Egyptian people, cautiously form a new government, and contribute to maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East. Carney also said the US is looking forward to working together with Morsi on the basis of mutual respect.

Meanwhile, British Foreign Secretary William Hague welcomed Morsi's win and said he hopes the new government will maintain national unity. He also urged the president-elect to work with other parties and minorities in the fledgling democracy. France also released a statement saying the election is an important historic moment for Egypt's political transition.
