Paraguay’s new government is facing a wave of criticism as several of the country’s closest allies condemned the dismissal of President Fernando Lugo by lawmakers, with some calling it a congressional coup.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said his government will cut off fuel exports to Paraguay. Chavez says Lugo’s removal as president last week was illegal and insists Venezuela will not recognize the new government of Federico Franco.

Speaking in Santiago on Sunday, Chile’s President Sebastian Pinera said "due process and the right to a proper defence were not properly respected" in Friday’s impeachment hearings. Meanwhile in the Paraguayan capital Asuncion, Lugo’s supporters gathered in front of a television station for a "democracy festival," to protest against what they say was a congressional coup.
