Russian President Putin meets Israeli PM

06-25-2012 19:15 BJT

Russian President Vladimir Putin is currently holding talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against the backdrop of sustained violence in Syria and concern over Iran's nuclear program.

This is Putin's second visit to Israel after a gap of seven years.

On the eve of the trip, Putin's top foreign policy aide, Yury Ushakov, said it would highlight the importance of this region for Russia and is designed to further strengthen Russia's position there. He said the Syria crisis and Iran woudl also be discussed in detail.

Russia, a member of the UN Security Council and Iran's main trade partner, has been at odds with the United States and some other Western nations on whether to impose stiffer sanctions on Tehran.

The US, along with Israel, has long accused Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons. But Iran insists its disputed nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes. A number of fresh rounds of talks have been held between Iran and the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany.

Russia is pushing for an international Syria conference and has already discussed the plan the European Union, Iran, Iraq and Jordan.
