Russian President Vladimir Putin is in Israel for a day-long visit, which focuses on Iran, regional situation and bilateral relations.

Upon arrival, Putin attended the inauguration of a memorial to the Soviet Red Army in the city of Netanya, paying tribute to the fallen soldiers of World War Two. Putin later met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem. Netanyahu says Putin agrees that a nuclear Iran would pose a grave danger to the world.

The Israeli Prime Minister repeated his call for the international community to impose tighter sanctions on Iran. Israel has long hoped Russia to pressure Iran to abandon its nuclear programme. On other issues, Putin called on Israel and the Palestinians to resume negotiations.

They also discussed the situation in Syria. Putin says negotiations as the only solution for such matters. The two leaders also agree to strengthen cooperation in the fields of gas and space exploration.
