Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has arrived in Santiago for his first official visit to Chile. It’s also the last leg of Wen’s four-nation South American tour, which has taken him to Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. During his visit to Argentina, both countries pledged to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen their strategic partnership.

In a written speech released upon his arrival in Chile, Premier Wen Jiabao hailed the traditional friendship between the two countries since they forged diplomatic ties 42 years ago.

Wen said "China treats its relationship with Chile from a strategic perspective and will work with Chile to bolster exchanges and cooperation."

He also highlighted the frequent high-level visits, fruitful cooperation in various fields, and sound cooperation on international and regional issues with the South American nation.

Before his arrival, Premier Wen Jiabao concluded a tour of Argentina. He has reached broad consensus with Argentine President Cristina Fernandez on deepening ties between the two countries.

Wen said "In the face of an increasingly complex international situation fraught with serious challenges, it is in the fundamental interest of both countries to further promote the overall development of the China-Argentina strategic partnership."

He added that China is ready to enhance political mutual trust with Argentina, support its sovereignty claims over the Malvinas Islands and improve cooperation to promote common development.

China will also work with Argentina to safeguard peace, justice and the interests of developing countries and promote more democratic international relations.

The Chinese premier noted that China’s 12th Five-Year Plan and the "Argentina 2020" development plan, when jointly implemented, would generate huge potential for cooperation.

Both sides have agreed to launch a mutual action plan between the two governments to map out a blueprint for future development of bilateral ties.

Wen also highlighted that the establishment of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States has been vital to the region’s integration process, which will help China and Latin American countries conduct broader and deeper cooperation to strengthen the overall capacity of developing countries.
