Egypt's president-elect takes oath of office

Egypt's president-elect Mohamed Morsi has taken an informal oath of office at Cairo's Tahrir Square, on the eve of his swearing-in as Egypt's first civilian president. Morsi declared to the crowd that people are the source of power and legitimacy. He also said he will respect the law and work together with all Egyptians to achieve the goals of the revolution.

In front of tens of thousands of cheering supporters on Cairo's Tahrir Square, Egypt's first Islamist and civilian president-elect vowed to fight for his authority as the spokesman of people.

Mohamed Morsi said he will defend the people's rights and devote himself to stopping the corruption and eliminating racial discrimination. During the speech, he also symbolically read an oath of office.

Mohammed Morsi, Egyptian president-elect, said, "I swear to the great god Allah that I will protect the republican system, respect the constitution and the law, and work for the good of the people."

In his speech, Morsi said people are the source of the authority. And there's no one and no institution above the will of the people. Morsi asserted that he will protect the state's interests. He pledged that Egypt will be free in its foreign relations, and will not follow any power’s desire.

Morsi is to be sworn-in before the constitutional court on Saturday. The ruling military authorities in the country have promised to transfer power to an elected president by Sunday.
