Representatives of some 100 countries are attending a third meeting of the "Friends of Syria" forum at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

Members will seek to exert more pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government while strengthening efforts to unite the opposition.

Senior members of the opposition Syrian National Council said they wanted the Annan peace plan to be put under a U.N. provision, which could invoke measures ranging from sanctions to military intervention.

Russia and China will not attend the gathering. The meeting is the third of its kind, with previous meetings held earlier this year in Tunisia and Turkey.
