The meeting of the "Friends of Syria" group has concluded in Paris. The third gathering called for tougher sanctions against the Syrian government. At the meeting attendees from about 50 countries mulled a peaceful political transition in the violence-torn country.

French President Francois Hollande said he expected a rapid implementation of the UN and Arab League- backed peace plan from UN mediator Kofi Annan. He also described the fall of Assad’s government in Syria as inevitable and called for tougher sanctions against Assad and more support for the rebels.

The last two sessions of the meetings were held in Istanbul and Tunis. China and Russia, both permanent members of the UN Security Council, did not attend the meetings. China says it backed the agreement at the Foreign ministers’ weekend meeting in Geneva. It continues to insist that Syrians must decide how the transition should be carried out, rather than allowing others to decide their fate.
