A third straight month of weak hiring shows the US economy is still struggling three years after the recession officially ended.

The latest report released by the Labor Department said the US has added a meager 80 thousand jobs in June, an indisputable evidence that the U.S. economy was losing steam. Meanwhile the unemployment rate remains unchanged from May, at 8.2 percent.

There has been a sharp slowdown in hiring, with the average pace in April, May and June falling to 75 thousand jobs, only a third of the first quarter’s level. Voters’ concerns over a fragile economy and stubbornly high joblessness threaten President Obama’s re-election chances in November.
