A Japanese veteran, who took part in Japan's aggression against China, has visited Dongning County in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.

Yoshino Toshio was stationed in the county after joining Japanese imperialist forces in 1943. He was captured by Chinese forces after Japan surrendered to China in 1945.

The veteran then stayed and worked in China for decades. Over the years, he's gradually realized the crimes Japan committed during its 14 years occupation of the northeast of the country.

The veteran later joined NGOs in Japan and devoted himself to strengthening exchanges and friendship between Japan and China. He has visited China dozens of times, and always hopes to improve Japanese's understanding of China and Chinese people.

He says, "The war back in 1937 was caused by Japan. And I was shocked by how much damage it did to Chinese people. China-Japan relations are not at their best right now. As a Japanese, I hope I can do something to contribute to straightening the friendship."
