UN special envoy Annan arrives in Syria for Assad talks

UN-Arab League special envoy, Kofi Annan, arrived in the Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday for crisis talks with President Bashar al-Assad.

The news that he’ll meet Assad came from a statement issued by his spokesman. According to Xinhua news agency, Annan is to meet al-Assad to discuss the faltering peace plan and renewed heavy fighting in the country. Annan arrived at the Dama Rose Hotel accompanied by Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mikddad. He made no comment about the details of his trip. Annan is only expected to be in Syria for 24 hours.
