UN-Arab League joint special envoy Kofi Annan has left Syria for Tehran. This comes following talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Kofi Annan says his meeting with the Syrian President was constructive, adding that they touched upon the need to end the violence. Ahead of that, Kofi Annan held talks with Major General Robert Mood, head of the UN Supervision Mission and Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Maiqdad. Annan arrived on Sunday for his third visit to Syria since the crisis began in the Middle Eastern nation. His visit comes after he acknowledged Saturday that the international community’s efforts to find a political solution to the escalating violence had failed.

Meanwhile Assad said in an interview on Thursday that US political support for "terrorists" was hindering the peace envoy's plan to end 16 months of unrest. Assad has also accused Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey of supplying the rebels trying to overthrow him with arms and other support. He said, however, that Annan's peace plan should not be allowed to fail.
