Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has declared himself fully recovered from cancer. Chavez says he’s ready to return to re-election campaigning ahead of an October poll.

The 57-year-old socialist leader, who’s led the South American nation since 1999, was diagnosed with cancer of the pelvis last year. He was given the all-clear at the end of 2011, but suffered a recurrence in February.

After intense treatment in Cuba and Venezuela, Chavez now says he’s fully fit and ready for the rigors of the campaign trail.

At a news conference lasting more than four hours, Chavez promised to launch his re-election campaign on Thursday. His health is likely to be a major factor in whether or not he wins another term.
