1, 200 British troops that were put on standby, have been called up to provide extra security for the Olympic Games. The decision was made as security arrangements were tweaked to make up for private firm G4S’s failure to recruit enough guards.

At a news conference on Games Preparation, the secretary of state for sport said the troops will join some 35-hundred of their uniformed colleagues already guarding Olympic venues. In evidence before a parliamentary committee last week, G4S Chief Executive said his company was now aiming to provide 7, 000 security guards, rather than the 10, 000 contracted.

Chief Executive of the Olympic Organising Committee said the extra troops were now being mobilised even though G4S was approaching that revised target.
