Thousands of civilians have fled from their homes after Congolese rebels and government forces continued to exchange heavy weapons fire around two eastern villages of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The violence, which started on Friday, happened days ahead of a regional summit due to tackle the rebellion which launched in April.

Already some 260,000 people have been forced to flee their homes. UN experts have said neighboring Rwanda is backing the rebels, which prompted the US to cut some military aid. But Rwanda denies the claims. UN peacekeepers have previously fired on rebel positions in support of government troops. The new rebellion has led to an escalation in tensions between Congo and Rwanda after three years of improved relations following years of conflict between the neighbors.
