A US Army sergeant faces a court-martial in North Carolina over the death of a Chinese-American soldier who officials say killed himself last year after enduring weeks of racial slurs and physical abuse.

Sergeant Adam Holcomb is the first of eight service members due to stand trial in connection with the alleged hazing and death of 19-year-old Private Danny Chen. Chen, born in New York City to Chinese immigrant parents, shot himself in a guard tower in southern Afghanistan on Oct. 3, 2011. Holcomb faces up to 17 years and nine months of confinement and a dishonorable discharge if convicted of all charges.
