India' s new president sworn in

Pranab Mukherjee has been sworn in as India’s 13th President. The 76-year-old political veteran has exerted huge influence in his capacities as finance, foreign and defense minister over two decades of national transformation.

He replaces Pratibha Patil, India’s first woman president. After the inauguration ceremony, Mukherjee gave a speech and was given a 21-gun salute. As the Supreme Commander of India’s armed forces, Mukherjee was also presented with a guard of honour at the Presidential palace. Mukherjee’s presence in the presidential palace is being widely hailed by the public.
