Syria's capital Damascus and its biggest city, Aleppo, have become embroiled in the fighting that has swept much of the country, both under shelling as troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad stepped-up efforts to crush rebels threatening the government's two main power centers.

Damascus has become a major focus in the battle for Syria. Residents in Syria's capital have reported shells landing in southern districts every minute on Thursday morning. And activists say helicopters were attacking one of the last rebel strongholds in the city after days of street fighting.

State TV meanwhile has broadcast footage of government troops firing weapons and sweeping the streets in an effort to capture members of what they are referring to as "terrorist groups."

A government solider said, "The armed forces will continue to cleanse the area of the remaining terrorists, so that it can restore calm and security to the country".

And Government forces are also intensifying efforts against rebels in Aleppo as activists report attacks by helicopters, fighter jets and artillery bombardment in several neighborhoods.

The government has suffered a series of setbacks over the past few weeks. Most prominent was an attack on Assad's top security team in Damascus that killed four members of his inner circle.
