London: Let the Games begin

07-27-2012 20:13 BJT

Athletes from all over the world have descended upon London for the much-awaited Olympic Games. The streets are a scene of celebration. Now as the countdown to the opening ceremony starts, is London fully ready to let the games begin?

Nothing’s too grand to have been left untouched by the Olympic rings in London. While across the country a cultural Olympiad has brought world music to millions for free. The carnival atmosphere has underlined the UK capital’s multi-cultural credentials.

As the red carpet welcome for the world’s athletic elite promises home support for all in one of the world’s most ethnically diverse cities.

In London’s West End, retailers are closely tracking hoped for extra spending from an additional one million visitors to the capital every day during the Games, possibly good news in a time of recession for the UK economy.

Caroline Rush, CEO of British Fashion Council, said, "We are hoping to see many more, successful Olympics here in London."

In the athlete’s village, flags of all nations are adding to the colour. While on the street, it’s never far from a little reminder of the only show in town. Across the capital, strange little statues have appeared, the Olympic mascot, clearly a cue for some pre-Olympic playtime. Taken aloft on the London Eye, the Olympic torch has been a high spot for a nation nervously preparing to welcome the world.

The bunting is out big time and the capital is just waiting for that starting pistol.

It’s a must see and with hotel rooms at a premium for London’s Olympic Party, huge ships have been squeezing into the riverside docks in London’s East End.

With last minute doubts over everything from security to traffic, London has successfully come through it all.
