Syrian government forces are continuing their assault on rebel positions in the city of Aleppo, the commercial capital of the country.

The army says it’s carried out a series of operations in the city, inflicting large numbers of casualties on opposition fighters. But rebel groups say they’ve beaten off several waves of the attacks, and are still in control of the city. Aleppo is being seen as a key battleground in the 16 month long conflict.

Activists say at least 31 people were killed on Sunday across Syria, nine of whom were in Aleppo. As the violence escalates, Poland, Greece and Malaysia have joined the list of countries closing their embassies in Syria.
