Jordan opened its first official Syrian refugee camp on the Jordanian-Syrian border on Sunday to accommodate the growing numbers of people fleeing the deadly violence.

The camp, near the northern town of Zaatari opened weeks after the United Nations refugee agency appealed to the country to make more room to meet the surge of refugees. The first phase of Zaatari camp will include 3,000 tents to host between 3,000 to 5,000 Syrian refugees.

In later phases the camp can be expanded for as many as 113,000 people. The Interior Ministry said as many as 1,000 refugees crossed over each day last week, four times the previous daily average. Waves of Syrians have also crossed into neighbouring Turkey. Growing numbers of refugees have been massing in the refugee camp in Turkey’s Hatay province.
