Syrian government troops say they have regained control of Sala-hud-dien neighborhood, a key battlefield in the week-long clashes in Aleppo.

State TV said Sala-hud-dien had been purged of armed groups. The neighborhood was the first to fall into the hands of the rebels last week. The rebels are the ones who had ignited the spark of fighting in Aleppo. Opposition forces said government troops had shelled three areas of Aleppo.

They added that at least 31 people were killed Sunday nationwide, nine of them in Aleppo. Meanwhile on Sunday, the government of Bashar al-Assad declared victory in a hard-fought battle for the capital Damascus. State TV said government forces had succeeded in freeing kidnapped people from the armed rebels in the suburbs of Damascus and southern Daraa province.
