China has fallen behind the US in the overall medals table. The slip comes despite some great performances by Chinese athletes in badminton and the trampoline.

On day seven of the London games, China took two medals in the men’s trampoline, managed a one-two in the badminton mixed doubles and secured an all Chinese encounter for the women’s singles badminton final. Cyclist Guo Shuang also added another silver to her personal collection.

China’s Dong Dong won the men’s trampoline with a colossal score of 62 point nine nine zero. Team mate Lu Chunlong made it two medals for China by taking bronze while Russia’s Dmitry Ushakov had to settle for second place.

In the badminton mixed doubles China did one better by winning gold and silver. The final turned out to be a comfortable victory for Zhao Yunlei and Zhang Nan, as they defeated compatriots Ma Jin and Xu Chen in straight sets. Zhao and Zhang looked every inch the world’s number one pairing as they took the first set 21 points to eleven. T hey then opened up a decisive lead at the start of the second-- taking the first eight points without reply.

At times it looked like a demonstration by Zhang and Zhao, with Zhao in particular missing nothing at the net all match. Towards the end, Ma and Xu finally found a way to live with their opponents but it proved too late as Zhang and Zhao wrapped things up, twenty one points to seventeen.

In the women’s singles, top seed Wang Yihan thrashed India’s strong title hope Saina Nehwal to set up an all-Chinese final and guarantee China another badminton one-two.

Britain’s Victoria Pendleton just managed to edge out China’s Guo Shuang to win gold in the Velodrome. It was the Chinese cyclist’s second silver in two days, after she was relegated from gold to silver during the women’s team sprint. Hong Kong’s Li Hui Shi claimed bronze.
