London 2012: Phelps signs off with 18th Olympic gold

In the final race at the aquatic centre in London, swimming great Michael Phelps has signed off with the 18th Olympic gold of his career, as he helped the US win the 4 by 100-meter medley.

The US team clocked 3 minutes 29.35 seconds. Japan claimed silver and Australia took bronze. Phelps swam third in the butterfly leg while 100-meters freestyle winner, Nathan Adrian, had the job of bringing the team home to glory. Phelps will leave London with 4 gold medals. Although it’s only half the number he won in Beijing, it’s more than enough to label him the greatest Olympic swimmer and perhaps the greatest Olympian, of all time.

The sporting world got their last look at Michael Phelps when the most decorated Olympian of all-time competed in his final race before retiring. The American swimmer though already secured his Olympic legacy, well before he made his last trip to London’s Aquatic centre.
