Britain's Andy Murray has beaten legendary Swiss player Roger Federer 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 to win the men's Olympic singles at Wimbledon.

Home favorite Murray, who lost to the Swiss in this year's Wimbledon final, started strongly and never looked back. Roared on by a massively partisan crowd, the young British player broke Federer’s serve time and time again, while he was imperious on his own. At one point between the first and second sets, he won nine consecutive games, breaking Federer’s serve four times in a row. The victory is somewhat of a breakthrough for the young Scotsman, who has lost in all four of his Grand Slam final appearances, three against Federer. For Federer who was playing in the Olympics for possibly the last time, the loss will come as a bitter disappointment as saw his attempt to complete a career Golden Slam fail.

Murray's win marks Great Britain's first tennis Olympic gold since 1906. He also becomes the first British man to win a singles tournament at Wimbledon for seventy six years, though the Wimbledon title itself still eludes him.
