A ship belonging to a Hong Kong activist group has arrived on the Diaoyu Islands. 7 of the activists have set foot on one of the islands, where they planted the Chinese national flag.

There are reports that minor clashes broke out between Japanese coast guard personell and the activists as they tried to plant the flag. Media reports say that at least 3 activists have been detained by the Japanese.

Around 40 Japanese coast guards can be seen on the islands and dozens of Japanese ships are reported to be in the area. Several Japanese helicopters were also seen hovering low around the island. Activists have put up a sign to ask the guards not to hurt them.

During their approach to the islands, nine Japanese warships were stationed in the area and one was using water cannons against the activist’s vessel. The aim of the trip is to assert China’s sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands. A previous attempt had been made by Hong Kong activists to sail to the Diaoyu Islands back in 2006.
