Japan has arrested 5 Hong Kong activists and detained 2 others who landed on the Diaoyu Islands at around half past four this afternoon.

The Japanese authorities have removed the Chinese national flag planted on one of the islands by the activists. It’s reported that Japan is likely to repatriate the group to Hong Kong. Earlier in the afternoon, nine Japanese warships surrounded the activists’ vessel, and used water cannon to deter its approach.

The vessel sustained damage after a Japanese ship hit it, but no casualties have been reported. The aim of the trip is to assert China’s sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands.
